A collaborative effort is employed to comprehensively care for the patient. The collaboration is among physicians and community resources in radiology, surgery, pathology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, plastic surgery, and support services. All resources are used to ensure quality and compassionate care for all patients.

Breast Diseases encompass both benign and malignant diseases of the breast. Benign breast diseases include, but are not limited to: breast pain, cysts, fibrocystic change, nipple discharge, and benign tumors like fibroadenomas. Malignant breast diseases are breast cancers that have the potential to spread to the rest of the body.

The role of a breast specialist is to evaluate the patient and utilize a complete history and physical examination, along with the appropriate diagnostic studies to make a diagnosis. Once a diagnosis is made, the patient will be given options for follow up or treatment. Most patients who have breast complaints will initially require more frequent follow up until a steady state is reached. Follow up options may require the patient to return for a physical exam in 3 to 6 months, or as soon as a few days in the case of an infection, and the patient may need an ultrasound, mammogram, or breast MRI to document stability.

Treatment may be as simple as prescribing a medication in some instances of infection, or may involve surgery. Often, a less invasive needle biopsy may be all that is required. The preparation before surgery is where the expertise of a breast specialist combines evidence-based breast disease management with the science and art of medicine to put together a plan that is tailored to the patient and her particular presentation. Not all patients are the same, and they can be affected differently by the same disease.

It is imperative that women, or men, seek medical attention immediately if they suspect there is a problem. Breast cancer knows no boundaries, and all genders, races, and ages are at risk. If you have any questions or concerns please contact a medical professional immediately. If you are not satisfied with the answer you receive, it is okay to get another opinion. Remember, often, there is no one right answer, but usually, there is a choice.
