Susanna Beshai, M.D.

"While I have always wanted to be a physician since I was a very young child, my reasons have evolved over the years. Initially, I wanted to "help people" and "give back". However, I have since realized that helping and giving are virtues of which everyone is capable. I now understand that practicing medicine is not a gift that I give, but it is a precious treasure that has been given to me. It is truly humbling to have the honor and privilege to care for others when they are most vulnerable. I would like to thank my patients for allowing me this honor which I do cherish."

Dr. Beshai is a board certified general surgeon who has dedicated her practice to diseases of the breast. She completed her undergraduate studies in Psychology and Pre-Med at Kent State University in Ohio, where she was raised. After, she attended The Medical College of Ohio, now The UT College of Medicine, where she chose to specialize in general surgery.

It was during her general surgery residency at The Monmouth Medical Center and Newark Beth Israel Medical Center that she developed a profound interest in diseases of the breast. The Jacqueline M. Wilentz Comprehensive Breast Center at The Monmouth Medical Center and weekly, prospective, multidisciplinary breast conferences provided the patient base and platform upon which she learned a solid evidence-based approach to managing breast disease. The program also afforded her the opportunity to complete residency rotations in surgical oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and trauma at The University of Pennsylvania.

After completing her general surgery residency in 2002, she joined a multispecialty surgical group in Fort Myers, Florida. There, her practice was comprised predominantly of patients afflicted with breast disease. She worked closely with her colleagues at Radiology Regional Center to establish diagnostic percutaneous biopsies as the standard of care, in an effort to avoid unnecessary surgeries. She also emphasized sentinel node biopsies as a less invasive way to evaluate the axilla when staging her patients with breast cancer.

Her management of breast disease embraced the multidisciplinary team approach which she learned during her residency training. The physicians at Florida Cancer Specialists and 21st Century Oncology became integral members of the management team in medical oncology and radiation oncology respectively. Another member of the team was Dr. Lorraine Golosow, a board certified plastic surgeon, who generously gave of her time and expertise to ensure patients who wanted reconstruction were given that option. Dr. Golosow's compassion and exquisite attention to detail provided Dr. Beshai's patients with much needed comfort and amazing aesthetic results.

In February of 2005, Dr. Beshai established Breast Care Specialists of Florida and dedicated her practice entirely to diseases of the breast. Her colleagues' and patients' support was evident, as she had a full practice three months later. Dr. Beshai never anticipated that the day would come when she would say farewell to her patients and the community. However, after she was married on July 21, 2007, Dr. Beshai closed her practice and moved to Sarasota to be with her husband. While she was sad to leave, she was eager to start her new, married life. Dr. Beshai was comforted in knowing her patients would receive outstanding care from Dr. Jacob Goldberger, her colleague, mentor, and dear friend.
